Burgh Beautiful

 Working towards a
 Greener, Brighter Linlithgow

Progress Report - June '04

The move towards a "Greener, Cleaner, Brighter Linlithgow" under the banner of Burgh Beautiful is gathering pace.

Successful Meeting  Nearly fifty people attended the Open Meeting in the Council Offices at the end of April, and from this some twenty five people signed up as being prepared to take an active part in some way. A Steering Group of fourteen volunteers has been set up, chaired by Peter Burton. The plan is to split up into smaller groups, each taking responsibility for different aspects of the project.

Plant Sale  The plant sale went ahead as planned on 29th May, and raised £265. Many thanks to all those who gave their time and/or plants and to Ricky Kerr who lent us the Rotary Club awning and came along to put it up and take it down for us. Thanks also to Hunter's garage, who have made a donation and to David Kennedy of Real Estate Signs who has sponsored the explanatory sign in the Lowport flower border.

First Steps  Burgh Beautiful has undertaken a small project this year at the left of the Lowport Centre gates where the drainage work had destroyed the previous planting.

We are working closely with the West Lothian Neighbourhood Environmental Team, and look forward to being ready to make an impact next summer.

Aims  The short-term aim is to enter Linlithgow in the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom competition. This will involve not only floral displays, but environmental and community projects involving as many different groups of local people as possible. The long term aim is to engender Civic pride in the community, and to make Linlithgow a better place in which to live, work or visit. This is a huge project, which will take some time to pull together, and it will probably be 2006 until we are ready to enter Linlithgow as a new entrant in the competition.

Please Help Us  Planning and fund raising are under way; more help is always welcome, and anyone with an interest in getting involved can get in touch with Burgh Beautiful by e-mailing burgh-beautiful@lct.org.uk
