Progress Report No. 3 - March 2005PlantingA year's planning is beginning to show some fruition. With the arrival of spring, last autumn's planting of bulbs donated by Linlithgow and Bo'ness Rotary Club has added some welcome colour on the verges at Blackness Road and Mains Road. The time has also arrived for bringing on bedding plants for the summer. Several offers of greenhouse space have been gratefully received and taken up and we hope to able to make some interesting displays and also have plenty of plants for sale at the Plant Sale on Saturday 28th May.
It now appears that we shall need planning permission for both the Mary Queen of Scots border by the McCarthy and Stone development and for the Katie Weary feature at Westport since they come within the Conservation Area, so these are on hold for the moment. We are also still waiting for resolution of the legal indemnity situation with the management of the Regent Centre and West Lothian Council. We would really like to get this 'Scottish Theme' border done at the Lowport roundabout as it will have a high profile impact on the Eastern end of the High Street. Once we have that in place, we will see what can be done about the border behind the bus shelter outside Tesco, and indeed, the whole car park area. The new planters for The Cross have arrived and will be put in place after Easter. We shall probably do a temporary spring planting for now and a colourful (but subtle) scheme at the end of May. We are still pushing for banners or hanging baskets in the High Street, but it appears that the lamp posts currently in place in the town are not strong enough. However, some new Heritage style posts may be in place by early summer at the east end of the town, and we may be able to try our hand at a few of the clamped type of basket for this year. The Guides are getting going on growing herbs for the Health Centre borders under the expert guidance of Breda Sneddon. It will be good to have the youngsters involved. The NET team have removed the tarmac at the Mill Road traffic lights, so we shall be able to plant a colourful town entrance border at the western end of Linlithgow Bridge. The barrels for the Station and Star and Garter are ordered, and will be in place for summer planting. Spring CleanJim Saunders will be speaking to all the Primary Schools at the start of next term, and volunteers will be cleaning up the litter in their own school grounds on Saturday 23rd April. We have asked that the schools do some posters that can be displayed all over town for the week and have a litter awareness week, culminating in a Community Tidy on the Saturday morning. We need volunteers to identify areas needing a clean-up and organise local groups. What messy area annoys you most? Here is an opportunity to do something about it. I'll be having a go at Springfield Park. The Council will provide litter picking grabs, gloves and sacks. We will try to get some prior publicity in the Gazette. The groups will all meet at the Cross at the end of the morning with their sacks of rubbish for a photograph, and hopefully, some sort of sponsored treat. Plant SaleLast year, members were very generous with donations of both perennials and annuals, so please remember us again this year. We are also hoping to have flat pack garden compost bins for sale at a very reasonable price. I had two from Falkirk Council last year, and can thoroughly recommend them. The sale will again be held, by special permission, at the Cross on Saturday 28th May from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you don't raise plants yourself, then do please come and support us by buying some to beautify your garden! CAN YOU OFFER ANY HELP? Anyone with an interest in getting involved can get in touch with Burgh Beautiful by e-mailing burgh-beautiful@lct.org.uk |
