Introductory Paragraph

This Royal Burgh is a favourite stop for visitors, with the Policies at Linlithgow Palace providing a took back in history while the loch and natural areas provide a haven for wildlife.

The town centre is enhanced with many fine seasonal bedding displays, and the Union Canal attracts many visitors to enjoy a peaceful trip on one of the barges.

Section A: Horticulture, Seasonal and Permanent Planting

The judges were particularly impressed by:

  • Quality of bedding - overall a high standard
  • Quality of grounds maintenance by local authority
  • Shrub and tree planting, and water features at Sun Microsystems
  • Use of barrels as planters, and well-filled
  • Good community spirit from local residents

Areas suggested for future development

  • More effective use of dot plants in annual beds
  • Closer attention to maintenance in replanted area opposite station (dead trees)
  • Offices comer at Lowport - suggest basket tree with appropriate low-maintenance planting
  • Lack of colour in heather beds
  • More colour on High Street

Section B: Sustainable Development and Biodiversity

The judges were particularly impressed by:

  • Management, education and interpretation at and around Palace/Peel/Loch
  • Lowport school garden
  • Re-use of stone, slate and barrels
  • Use of compost from brown bin collection, and education on waste
  • Biodiversity meadow area near flood prevention works

Areas suggested for future development:

  • Input from pupils at school on visit if possible

Section C: Local Environmental Quality

The judges were particularly impressed by:

  • Organisation of clean-ups
  • Generally very clean and tidy

Areas suggested for future development:

  • More attention to maintenance of street furniture on Main St (broken bench)
  • More frequent cleaning of bird droppings/control of birds (feeding of)

Section D: Public Awareness / Participation

The judges were particularly impressed by:

  • Community involvement at station - children's tiles, mural, church banners
  • Partnership working with Council and other partners e.g. Rotary, parents

Areas suggested for future development:

  • Involvement of greater numbers of the local community
  • More involvement from traders in supporting the campaign
